2020

2020-2021 were the covid years. We stayed in mostly and tried to find things to do. It saw me return to painting after spending most of 2014-2019 focused on working out, triathlons and such. So some percentage of that time was now available for painting. We also added my son and daughter to the family, so there was time spent trying to keep them alive.

An old sculpt that is supposed to be an owl bear. I think this came to me painted and all I did was some touch up. Not a particularly good sculpt/pose.

Reaper. You can never have enough rogues. Seriously, alley ambushes will have like 8 skulky types, so bring out the rogues.

An early sculpt of an umber hulk. Inherited the sculpt. I don't hate it, but its age and lack of dynamic pose makes it more just a historical curiosity.

Reaper Black Orc (1 of 2) You can also never have enough orcs. I painted this one out of the blister in 2020. The second was not finished until much later.

While I like the old Ral Partha tornado sculpt, this one has a good look too.

Reaper Bones had a variety of furniture and stuff. I have a lot of tavern dressing; none of it matches, but I guess it gives me the chance to make different builds have different tones.

Reaper Shambling Mound. Although the Reaper name is something else.

Pretty sure this was on Will P purchased and I inherited and painted. Pack Horses are one of those things you kind of take for granted, so a utility sculpt.

Reaper Unicorn. I already had at least one traditional white unicorn, so I wanted to try to see if I could make a clydesdale style. Horse bodies are hard because there is rarely enough topological difference to sell the muscle structure.

I think this is supposed to be an ogre, but scale creep is a real thing so it can pass as a giant if needed.

I think this is an old Citadel or Grenadier. Female bard. Done to help meet my one old a month goal.

Reaper Bones - the casks are separate from the stall. I am not sure why I chose red, but I think it was because in my mind the owner might near a bunch of other stalls and color might be used to differentiate whose stall was whose. But I only have the one stall, so that is not going to be apparent if/when this ever hits a table top.

Not sure why I have this or where he came from, but he makes a good Bond-style spy. Of course, I never play those games, so he was really just done to boost numbers.

Reaper Bones had a variety of spell effects including a selection that seem based on the various Bigby Hand spells

More Reaper spell effects - Tenser's Floating Disc, Mordenkainen's Sword, Invisible Servant, and my first wall of thorns. I painted a bunch of these, because the wall spells rarely are just 10' long. I was inconsistent with my paint scheme across the different times I painted it. Quite the pain to get all the little thorns painted.

This was part of the Snakey Temple set I got a long time ago. The details are not as crisp in the treasure pile and I procrastinated on it for a long, long time. Pretty sure this was the last piece of the set I painted.

This is a custom sculpt I made with Hero Forge. He was for Diane Y's Myboi character in the Return of the Runelords campaign. He was part of the Katanga clan of halflings. This may be the first or second sculpt I did with Hero Forge (Mia of the same campaign being the other early one). While the possibilities seem great, the actual delivered minis are not as cool as I want them to be. The black material (resin?) that they use means that details are not readily apparent with a dark primer and sometimes you don't want bright primer, but you need one for that material. Even then, the details are not always super crisp. And the price point was comparatively steep - more than a similarly sized metal mini. I get it, customized versus mass produced, but I was left thinking it was not quite worth it. Maybe when I get into doing my own 3D printing, buying the stl file and printing it would have changed that evaluation, but in 2020...meh.

Chainmail Human Death Cleric. Another inherited from Will P who had a lot of the Chainmail line.

Reaper Vulture Demon - their version of the Vrock. I had this mini started and unfinished for a long, long time. I think I was unhappy with the colors I was picking. But by 2020, I just wanted it to be done. This was probably my first Vrock, but by the time I finished, I had numerous Wizkids prepainted Vrocks. Since this metal, and I painted it, I have used it for solo Vrocks or advanced/boss Vrocks.

Reaper Earth Elemental. More rock and mud than some of the other earth elementals. Not sure why they needed the tombstone.

Celtos I think. Another inherited from Will P. Given the subject, you would think I would have painted the rest of them, but they remain so low use, I opt for others.
