In the fall of 1990, I ventured south for college.  I took my painting and gaming with me, although for the first two years it was not exceptionally active in my life.

Then the summer of '93 between junior and senior year, I was a lifeguard on campus, and I had a lot of free time.  Hungates was close enough, and I bought and painted a lot.  I dabbled with sprucing up my basing.  I got better at my washes and dry brushing.

This is where I developed my basic approach to painting miniatures.  Block out the mini with all the colors doing a decent job at staying in the lines.  Then a black  or dark wash to black line and create shadows.  If the space is large enough, a dedicated color wash.  Repaint with base color on the raised portions, dry brush with highlights.  This means that I basically paint the miniature twice.  Inefficient, but it does let me see the color palette in play and make adjustments.

I was still painting almost exclusively Ral Partha in this window.  In large part because that is what Hungates sold and also because they still had a lot of the AD&D licensed miniature line available.  Double checking, they did not lose the license until 1998.  So that tracks this window.  My paints were my old Polly S paints and a growing mix of Ral Partha paints.
